Bell Street Eltham Masterplan

Welcome to Bell Street

Planning has begun to determine a community use for 4.87 hectares of land between Bell Street and the Diamond Creek in Eltham, opposite Eltham High School. This land is known locally as Fabbro's Farm, named after the family who owned and farmed the land from the 1930s until the 1970s.

Open space for community use

When Fabbro’s Farm was offered for sale in 2009, the collaborative and strong relationships between local residents, community organisations and state and federal bodies led to the acquisition of the land by the State Government in 2010.

Nillumbik Shire Council is the appointed Committee of Management and will work with the community to consider potential uses of the land.

Bell Street Masterplan

The Bell Street Masterplan will look at potential future uses for the land considering the following:

  • community management and governance
  • links to surrounding community infrastructure and organisations
  • logistical and financial feasibility of any uses proposed
  • opportunities for participation
  • the maintenance needs of the precinct

This is an exciting opportunity for our community to work with Council on how to use this site and contribute directly towards its future operation.

Significance of Bell Street land

The Bell Street land connects a range of important community spaces and facilities, including Alistair Knox Park, Eltham Lower Park, Barak Bushland, Wingrove Park, Eltham Community and Reception Centre, Living & Learning Nillumbik, Eltham Library and sporting facilities including the Susan Street Reserve, Eltham Rugby Club, Eltham BMX track, Eltham Bowls Club, Eltham skate park and Eltham Leisure Centre.

These parks, open spaces and community facilities are linked by a series of shared recreational pedestrian and cycle paths known as the Diamond Creek Trail, which is part of the Melbourne Trail Network. These paths form an unofficial off-road commuting route for many pedestrians and cyclists, particularly school children, linking Eltham Lower Park to Eltham centre and train station, and beyond to Diamond Creek (and in future, to Hurstbridge).
