Citizenship

Council hosts citizenship ceremonies for Nillumbik residents on behalf of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. Citizenship ceremonies are special events.

They fulfil requirements under Australian citizenship law. They also provide an important opportunity to officially welcome new citizens as full members of the Australian community. They are often an emotional experience for the new citizen, as well as their host and guests.

Council will be holding the citizenship ceremonies on:

  • Thursday 26 January 2017, commencing at 10am at Community Bank Stadium, 129-163 Main Hurstbridge Road, Diamond Creek

  • Thursday 4 May, commencing at 7.30pm at the Civic Centre, Civic Drive, Greensborough

  • Thursday 27 July, commencing at 7.30pm at the Civic Centre, Civic Drive, Greensborough

  • Thursday 12 October, commencing at 7.30pm at the Civic Centre, Civic Drive, Greensborough

Applications for citizenship are made directly to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection. Once your application has been approved, arrangements will be made for you to attend a citizenship ceremony. It takes three to six months from the time your application is approved to be invited to a citizenship ceremony.

For further information on becoming an Australian citizen, see the Australian Government website  or call the Department of Immigration and Border Protection on 131 880.
