Water is a life-giving resource required by all living things to survive. Drought conditions and the excessive use of our water reserves have increased the need for water conservation measures. Nillumbik residents are some of the highest consumers of water resources in the Melbourne area.
Effective management of this important resource needs to involve both the conservation of available water sources and the protection of water quality in our local waterways. The management of our water systems is not only a state and local government responsibility but is also heavily influenced by activities undertaken in the home.
Council initiatives
- The Sustainable Water Management Plan provides a strategic direction for improved water management throughout Council operations and the Nillumbik community. The most significant outcomes of this Plan are Council’s water reduction targets for both corporate operations and within the community. Council aims to achieve a 45% reduction in reticulated water use (from 2000-2001 levels) by 2010-2011 and is working towards achieving a community water reduction target of 25% (from 2000-2001 levels) by 2010-2011.
