Active transport

October is Walk to School Month

Active travel is great for our health and environment so get involved.

Last year, more than 140,000 students took part and walked the equivalent of two return trips to the moon. Walk to School Month is about encouraging children and families to walk, ride or scoot to school to build healthy habits.

We support local primary schools to encourage their students to participate in Walk to School Month each October.

Registrations are now open. Go to the Walk to School website or contact us on 9433 3723 or community.transport@nillumbik.vic.gov.au

Walking School Bus

Walking School Buses are a fun way to get to school. The Walking School Bus follows a set route and picks up 'passengers' along the way. Volunteers, usually parents, supervise primary school students as they walk to school in a group.

Children get regular exercise and learn about road safety while socialising and making new friends. Reduced car travel benefits the environment and eases traffic congestion around schools.

To find out more about how to start and run a Walking School Bus at your school, go to the VicHealth website

Or contact Council on 9433 3723 or community.transport@nillumbik.vic.gov.au

National Walk Safely to School Day

National Walk Safely to School Day is held in May each year. This is an annual event which encourages all primary school children and their parents and carers to walk and commute regularly and safely to school.
