Business Registrations

Council’s Environmental Health Unit is responsible for registering and inspecting a wide range of businesses that operate in Nillumbik Shire.  These include business that sell food, are related to health and beauty treatment or involve accommodation for tourists and permanent residents.  Examples of these businesses include:

Food Businesses

• Restaurants/Cafés/Hotels/Takeaways
• Aged Care facilities/Child care centres/Schools
• Supermarkets and convenience stores

Health Businesses

• Hairdressers
• Skin penetration businesses
• Tattooists
• Beauty therapy businesses

Accommodation Businesses

• Motels/hotels
• Bed and Breakfasts
• Guest accommodation
• Caravan parks
• Rooming houses

If you are considering starting a food, health or accommodation business you should contact Council’s Environmental Health Unit to discuss the relevant registration requirements.  Some types of premises require pans to be submitted for approval as part of the registration process however this is a voluntary process for most registration types.  Council recommends new businesses undergo plans approval to ensure the design and construction meets the relevant standards. 

Where there is an existing business registration an application must be made to Council to transfer the registration into the details of the new owner of the business.  It is possible to obtain information on the current condition of the business and issues that have been identified through inspections by an Environmental Health Officer.  Consent from the existing owner must be obtained before Council can formally release any information to a third party.  This information can be obtained by completing the Request for information form that must be completed by both the existing owner and person who the information is to be released to.
