Where do my green organics go?
Green waste from Nillumbik and other northern councils is being temporarily diverted to Hanson Landfill at Wollert while an alternative processing facility is being arranged.
Nillumbik Council, with 11 other northern Councils is involved in Northern and Western Organics Processing Contract. Once this facility is built, Nillumbik Council will return to recycling its garden and food waste. Until then, Nillumbik residents are urged to continue to dispose of green waste in their green bins. Separate your waste as usual and avoid contaminating green waste with plastic bags or other household garbage.
While the return to processing green waste to mulch and soil improving products is preferred, Hanson landfill reduces its carbon footprint by converting waste to energy. Methane gas generated by the landfill, to which green waste is a large contributor, is being extracted and converted to electricity. Hanson landfill representatives claim they are exporting enough electricity to the grid to power approximately 4000 households.
For more information on Methane capture see the LMS website
