Representatives of the Hohnes Road Playhouse committee met with Nillumbik Mayor Peter Clarke last week to share their plans that will keep the unique playgroup service operational in 2018 and beyond.

Council engaged a consultant in October to help the committee develop a sustainable financial model which enables the playhouse to continue to operate on an independent basis.

“I’m absolutely thrilled that Playhouse has a future and that our unique play-based sessions are still available to the many families of Nillumbik and neighbouring areas” stated Hohnes Road Playhouse Chairperson Genevieve Speechley.

“Our volunteer committee worked extremely hard in a very short timeframe, redesigning our organisation so that it can operate without council funding.  We are grateful to the council for providing us with an expert to guide the process.”

Mayor Peter Clarke was also positive about the future of the Playhouse and what it means for local residents.

“I’m delighted that a solution has been found that will allow Hohnes Road Playhouse to continue delivering the excellent services it is known for.”

During his visit Cr Clarke also offered Council’s support to freshen the building up for the start of 2018 with a new coat of paint on the inside. The Council will also be assisting the service with marketing to promote the new program.

Hohnes Road Playhouse will continue to run its unique educator-led reciprocal-style playgroup ‘Share the Care’ in 2018.  Additional services include ‘Stay and Play’ parent-led playgroup, ‘Pre-school Drop & Go’ occasional care (3-5yo) and venue hire for children’s parties. Hohnes Road Playhouse operates out of premises leased from Nillumbik Shire Council under a peppercorn rental arrangement. The council has assured the Playhouse Committee of Management that they have every intention of renewing the lease when it is due in January 2019.
