Bushfire in Nillumbik
Nillumbik is recognised as one of the highest fire risk areas in the world due to its combination of vegetation, climate, topography and demography. The localities of North Warrandyte, the Plenty Gorge, Christmas Hills and St Andrews are especially prone to fire risk because of poor access and water supply coupled with concentrations of population.

Fire services in Nillumbik
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade is responsible for the small portion of the Shire west of the Plenty River between Janefield and the Greensborough Bypass/Northern Ring Road. The Country Fire Authority is responsible for the remainder of the Shire through each of the local township fire brigades as listed below.

Emergency Planning
In any type of emergency, the question of refuge and evacuation is a very complex one that depends on the circumstances of the day. In both rural or township areas, each home and property should have an emergency plan and be maintained as a family's primary refuge.

Emergency Management
Council's Emergency Management Office supports the Nillumbik community through the development of strategies for the prevention of, preparedness for, response to and recovery from emergencies within the Shire.

This work is carried out by the statutory committees formed under the:

Emergency Management Act 1986 and the
Country Fire Authority Act 1958.

Council provides advice to the community, especially those about to build, on the aspects of fire protection best suited to each particular site or situation.

Emergency Planning Committee
The Emergency Management Act 1986 requires Nillumbik Shire Council establish a Municipal Emergency Planning Committee whose task it is to develop an Emergency Management Plan for the community. This committee has representatives from emergency services, employees of Council and community members.

The plan includes the following aspects:

identification of hazards that may affect the municipality
identification of 'at risk' communities
promotion of prevention programs
determination of available resources
detailing the response and recovery procedures.
