New building standard as a result of the bushfires
In response to the February 2009 bushfires, the Victorian Government has introduced a new residential building standard which came into effect on 11 March 2009 as an amendment to the Victorian Building Regulations 2006. The new standard applies to all new proposals for dwellings, alterations, and additions in the State of Victoria.

A guide to building in Victoria after the bushfires has been prepared for those intending to build. To determine the potential level of bushfire risk that new proposals are likely to endure, it will be necessary to assess the Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) applicable to determine the specific construction requirements to be incorporated in the design.

The above guides and other publications are available on the Building Commission website.

To rebuild, renovate or significantly repair a home in an area affected by bushfire threat the process will be no different to any other building project but will need to take the new building standard into consideration.
