Friday 19 June 2009

Nillumbik Shire Council Arts and Cultural Services host a Red Chair artist talk on the first Wednesday night of each month at The Pavilion, Living & Learning Nillumbik – Eltham.

The next talk, on Wednesday 1 July at 7pm, will discuss the ancient Greek practice of ekphrasis, which means a literary description of or commentary on a visual work of art. Historically, poets would write in direct response to visual art and craft.

Local sculptor, Brett Ditchfield and local poet, Fee Sievers will share their ekphrasis experiences in relation to their upcoming exhibition Tripping the Light Ekphrastic, which will be on view at the Eltham Library Community Gallery from 9 July – 3 August 2009.

For this exhibition, Mr Ditchfield and Ms Sievers will collaborate with local painters, Ona Henderson and Syd Tunn.

Nillumbik Shire Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Culture and Arts Advisory Committee, Cr Helen Coleman said ekphrasis has offered visual art a voice and poetry a body.

“Ekphrasis has offered both the artists different perspectives and has allowed them to explore new avenues and direction. It will be a very interesting talk.”
