Parenting in Perspective Sessions

In conjunction with your maternal child health visits families are encouraged to attend these additional parenting sessions. Sessions are free of charge to Nillumbik residents. If you live outside the Shire the cost is $15 to be paid in cash at the first session. Bookings are essential and can be made by your maternal child health nurse or online

Our Presenters

Timothy O'Leary is an early childhood specialist based in Melbourne. He is the author of Dads Who Can and Parents Who Can and regularly presents at conferences around parenting and child development. He uses visual images and videos to help parents understand what their baby needs and how they play a major role in shaping their child's development. He is also a father of two school-aged children. Tim has been with the Nillumbik  program since it's inception.

Expecting your first baby?

At this information session you will:

  • meet other local expectant parents
  • find out what to expect when you bring your baby home
  • discuss relationship and life style changes, self-care and mindfulness
  • get information on services, programs and support available to Nillumbik families

Understand Your Baby

Parents of babies between 1-3 months are welcome to come to an information session to hear about:

  • adjusting to your baby’s needs  
  • your baby’s development  
  • reading your baby’s cues  
  • understanding your own needs  
  • self-care  
  • parenting as a couple

Why Dads Matter

This session is for dads of babies between 0-5 years:

  • the importance of dads
  • fatherhood as a priority
  • parenting styles
  • work life balance
  • the importance of communication

The supporting mothers session will run on the same night at the same venue.

Supporting Mothers

For mothers of new babies between 0-5 years:

  • the link between a mother and her child's well being
  • responsive parenting
  • how to thrive, not just survive
  • the importance of self-care
  • emotion coaching
  • responsive discipline

Toddler to Preschool

For parents of children aged between 18 months – 3 years:

  • impulse control and challenging emotions in children  
  • accepting limits and learning rules
  • responsive parenting
  • separation anxiety
  • independence

All sessions are held at the Nillumbik Shire Offices, located at Civic Drive, Greensborough.

Babies are welcome but due to space constraints prams cannot be brought into the room
