 2012 Alan Marshall Short Story Award

The Alan Marshall Short Story Award, founded in 1985, is presented by Nillumbik Shire Council in partnership with Yarra Plenty Regional Library. The 2012 judge is Louise Swinn, Editorial Director of Sleepers Publishing.

The three categories in the Award are: 

Open Section - stories up to 2500 words by writers who reside in Australia
        First prize $2000
        Second prize $1000

Local Writers Section – stories up to 2500 words by writers who live, work or study in the Shire of Nillumbik
        $1000 prize

Young Writers Section – stories up to 1000 words by writers aged between 15 and 19 years who reside in Australia.
        $400 prize

The Nillumbik Ekphrasis Poetry Award

Entries for The Nillumbik Ekphrasis Poetry Award have now closed. The winners will be announced on 21 June 2012.

The Nillumbik Ekphrasis Poetry Award is an exciting initiative presented for the first time in 2012. Ekphrasis is a genre of poetry that explores works of art—usually paintings, photographs, or statues. Ekphrastic poetry seeks to interpret or ‘get inside’ its visual subject.

Poets were invited to respond to one or more of twelve artworks selected from the Nillumbik Shire Council Visual Art Collection.

•First prize: $500

•Second prize: $300

•Third prize: $200

•Youth prize: $150 (12-18 years old)

Twelve poems will be selected by judges Helen Lucas, Fee Sievers and August Skipper. The twelve poems will be printed on a series of postcards with their corresponding art work.

The Nillumbik Prize

Nillumbik Shire Council in association with Montsalvat presents one of the oldest community art shows in Victoria, The Nillumbik Prize. Celebrating the artists and works around the Nillumbik region, entrants must demonstrate a connection with the Nillumbik Shire as a local artist or through a Statement of Connection.

1st Prize $5,000 (non-acquisitive) for a work of excellence in any medium. Two commendations as well as a People’s Choice Award, each to the value of $500 are also given. An exhibition of the finalists will be held at Montsalvat from 14 June to 12 August with prize winners announced at the official opening on Thursday 14 June 2012.

Eltham Library Community Gallery exhibition program

Laughing Waters Artist-in-Residence Program

Nillumbik Shire Council and Parks Victoria host an annual Laughing Waters Artist-in-Residence Program. Artists reside at either Birrarung or Riverbend, located in Laughing Waters Road, Eltham. Both properties are in protected bushland owned by the State and managed by Parks Victoria.

The program aims to:
• Provide the opportunity for contemporary artists to develop their practice in an inspiring natural and cultural environment
• Contribute to our cultural development by providing access to high quality arts activities and giving local artists professional development opportunities
• Raise awareness and help conserve the environmental and cultural values of the properties where the artists’ reside
• Profile the Shire of Nillumbik as a leading arts location in Victoria
