Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Park & Tower of Remembrance

Eltham-Yarra Glen Road, Kangaroo Ground (Melway 272 G10)

The Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Tower is built on the highest hill in the district. It was unveiled on 11 November 1926 and is used as a fire-spotting tower in the summer. It offers 360 degree views which take in Melbourne, the north-east suburbs and the Dandenong and Kinglake Ranges. The surrounding park has a viewing platform, toilets, picnic facilities and gardens. It is open daily and closes at dusk.

Andrew Ross Museum is located in the old teachers’ residence of Kangaroo Ground Primary School, an 1870s heritage listed building. The main focus of the museum is archiving, preserving and displaying Kangaroo Ground's heritage. A large photographic collection, together with numerous documents and research information are on display.

Constructed in 1865 by William Ellis, the cottage is constructed from local uncut stone and originally had a shingle roof which was later replaced by slate. The Nillumbik Historical Society houses a large collection of historic photographs and documents of pioneering families from Diamond Creek and its surrounds.

 

Hurst Family Cemetery

The Hurst family were early settlers in the Hurstbridge area, named after a log bridge erected by Henry Hurst and known locally as "Hurst's Bridge". Henry died in 1866 and was the first Hurst to be buried in what would be known as the Hurst Family Cemetery which was used until 1924. The Eltham Shire Council purchased the Cemetery in the 1970s.

The Warrandyte Historical Society runs the Warrandyte Historical Museum which is located in the restored Post Office (1875). The Museum houses a large collection of historic photos covering local gold, art, aboriginal and domestic history.

The Yarrambat Historical Society is in the process of developing the Yarrambat Heritage Museum on 2.5 hectares at Yarrambat Park.

 

Queenstown Cemetery

It is a pioneer and miners' cemetery established during the gold rush of the 1850s. The Queenstown Cemetery Trust and Friends and Relations of Queenstown Cemetery maintain and preserve the cemetery for future generations. Heritage walks at the Cemetery can be arranged by appointment.
