Nillumbik falls within the boundaries of the internationally recognised Yarra Valley.    This is a designated wine region defined by a set of geographical indicators determined by the Australian Wine and Brandy Commission.

The word Nillumbik is an Aboriginal word meaning shallow earth.  It is this rare soil which has spawned the cool climate award-winning wines that are known and sought after for their crisp, clean and intense flavour.

Local wineries range from the volcanic hilltops of Kangaroo Ground, across the gravelly clays of Panton Hill and St Andrews, down to the fine soils of Arthurs Creek and Yan Yean.

Many of our wineries have cellar doors where you can meet the winemaker, hear the stories and taste and buy the wine. Winery constructions and cellar doors vary from contemporary designs to ancient Italian-inspired stone or mud brick buildings.    Some offer meals or platters of local produce and also include a gallery exhibiting works by local artists.

For a list of the Nillumbik wineries, and details on the Open Cellars of Nillumbik or WinterFest Winery events,  visit the Nillumbik Tourism Association website.
