Register a new food business (Class 1, 2 or 3)

The Food Act 1984 requires all businesses that handle, prepare, package, store, serve, supply and repackage food to be registered with their local council.

The type of registration that is required for your business will depend on the nature of your food business, what type of food you are handling and to whom the food is being served or sold.

How to register

Before you begin

Step 1.Do your research

Make sure you are familiar with the background information and requirements of operating a food premises.

Before submitting your application, you must have already determined:

  • Which classification/class applies to your food business
  • How you will meet the food safety requirements
  • The details of your Food Safety Program (if applicable)
  • Who will act as your Food Safety Supervisor (if applicable)

Step 2.Gather supporting documents

Your application will need to include:

  • A floorplan of the business, showing all equipment and sink locations
  • A proposed menu
  • A copy of the current Food Safety Program for your business (Class 1 and 2 premises only)
  • A copy of the nominated Food Safety Supervisor's certificate (Class 1 and 2 premises only)

Step 4.Proceed to apply

Step 1.Email the form to us

Email your completed application form to nillumbik@nillumbik.vic.gov.au, attention to Environmental Health.

Step 2.Receive a receipt email from us

A member of the Environmental Health team will email you confirm that your application has been received. This email will include a reference number.

Step 3.Pay the application fee

Pay with cash, cheque, money order, EFTPOS, Mastercard or Visa. Please note we do not accept Diners Club and American Express

Payable to "Nillumbik Shire Council" and crossed "Not Negotiable".

What happens next?

After your application is submitted, there are a few more steps that must be taken before your registration can be confirmed.

Council assesses your application

After your application is received and the application fee has been paid, an Environmental Health Officer will review the submitted documents.

Risk assessment

An Environmental Health Officer will contact you to arrange an appointment to meet onsite and conduct a risk assessment. A report will then be issued listing any non-conformances.

Final inspection

After any non-conformances have been attended to, an Environmental Health Officer will attend to conduct a final inspection.

Certificate of Registration

Following the final inspection, a Certificate of Registration will be issued.
