Information for voters


Australian citizens over the age of 18 must enrol to vote.

You are already enrolled to vote in the Nillumbik Shire Council elections if:

  • You will be 18 years of age or older on election day;
  • You live within Nillumbik Shire Council; and
  • You are on the State Electoral Roll for your current residential address.

You will need to enrol to vote if:

  • You are an Australian citizen 18 years or older;
  • You are not on the State Electoral Roll; or
  • You have moved to a new address, and have not updated your enrolment details. You must have changed your postal address.

Am I enrolled to vote and are my enrolment details current?

Information relating eligibility and the electoral role can be found on the VEC website or by contacting the VEC on 13 18 32.

To be eligible to vote, you must be on the voters roll by the close of roll 4pm 57 days prior to election day, being Friday 28 August 2020

Voting is compulsory for voters who were on the State roll for this election by 4pm on Friday 28 August 2020.



Voting in the 2020 Nillumbik Shire Council general elections will be conducted by post.

Ballot packs

Mailing out of ballot packs will occur between 6 October and 8 October, and will occur via randomised dispatch. People in the same household may not receive their packs on the same day.

We request that voters wait until the following week before contacting the election office for replacement material.

Your ballot pack will indicate which ward you reside in. To check your ward now, please download the Nillumbik ward map from the VEC website.

Confirming your ward for the 2020 Council elections 

Please note: the VEC has recently undertaken an Electoral Representation review, which has resulted in a slight change to the boundary between Swipers Gully Ward and Sugarloaf Ward. This will affect a small number of residents currently in the Sugarloaf Ward. These changes come into effect on 24 October 2020. You can view the revised ward boundary map here. We recommend using use the VEC website to confirm your ward for the 2020 general election. Residents will receive their voting pack according to the revised ward boundaries.

Who are the candidates?

Candidates will be listed on the Victorian Electoral Commission website progressively from Thursday 17 September 2020.

How do I vote? 

  • When you receive your ballot pack, separate your ballot paper from the candidate information leaflet
  • On the ballot paper, put the number 1 in the box next to the candidate you most want to see elected, then number all the other boxes in order of your choice. You must number every box and only use each number once
  • Place your completed ballot paper in the ballot paper envelope and seal down the side flap at the red arrows
  • Complete the details on the other side of the flap: sign and date
  • Place the ballot paper envelope in the reply-paid envelope
  • Post as soon as possible

Close of voting

Voting closes at 6pm on Friday 23 October 2020.

Voters should ensure their ballot packs are in the post by 6pm on 23 October 2020. The VEC and Council recommend that you check the clearance time of your post box. It is the responsibility of the voter to ensure you meet the close of voting deadline, post boxes cleared before 6pm on 23 October 2020 may result in you missing the deadline. You may also hand-deliver your completed ballot to the election office at 7/256 Bolton Street, Eltham.

If you will be away during the voting period

If you will be away when ballot packs are mailed, or your address has changed since Friday 28 August 2020, you can request for your ballot pack to be redirected by writing to:

Requests for redirection must be received by Thursday 17 September 2020.

Large print and braille ballot papers

Large print or braille ballot papers are available for voters who are blind or have low vision—please register by Tuesday 15 September 2020. To register, call 03 8620 1222 during business hours.

Request an early postal vote

To apply for an early postal vote, contact the Election Manager from Wednesday 23 September 2020 on 03 8619 1457 and make an application. You must provide a valid reason.
