An expanded range of kerbside bins are now available for households in Nillumbik Shire.

The change come as JJ’s Waste & Recycling takes over the delivery of Nillumbik Shire Council’s kerbside waste collection.

Council has provided the new extra services in response to community feedback about the current kerbside waste collection arrangements.

The new options are in addition to the existing bins. The new options include:

• A larger 240-litre weekly green waste bin.

• A weekly 120-litre landfill bin

• A larger 140-litre fortnightly landfill bin

Mayor Karen Egan said Council had listened to what the community had to say about kerbside waste collection.

“While most of our residents are happy with the current arrangements, following community consultation, we are increasing the range of services we provide, for those who need them,” Cr Egan said.

“For residents who don’t want changes to their bins or collection frequency, services will continue as normal and they don’t need to do anything.

“Big households, those with additional needs and families with children in nappies may appreciate the options for a larger fortnightly landfill bin or a weekly landfill bin collection.

“But we would continue to encourage residents to reduce household waste wherever possible.

“The new green waste bin option is double the size of the current bin and will further help residents preparing their properties for the bushfire season. It will also assist residents cleaning up after storm events such as the one we experienced in parts of the Shire in January.”

There are conditions and charges associated with the new options. Residents can upgrade their green waste bin for free, but there will be extra charges for the weekly landfill collection and larger landfill bin options.

The charges were set in Council’s 2020-21 Budget, which was endorsed on 23 June 2020.

Residents can take up the new options at any time throughout the year.

Due to popular demand, bookings for the new green waste bin are on hold as we restock. Council aims to reopen bookings as soon as possible and will keep the community informed.

JJ’s Waste & Recycling began the collection of the Shire's kerbside bins on 1 July.

“Residents will see no changes to services as a result of changing providers,” Cr Egan said.
