Landcare groups
Nillumbik’s Landcare groups play a vital role in the protection and enhancement of our unique landscape. They are also a valuable resource of practical support and knowledge to landowners, especially new landowners.
Council values these groups and aims to provide programs to complement and support the essential role that they perform in the Shire. Nillumbik’s Landcare groups joined together to form the Nillumbik Landcare Network which facilitates strategic planning and cooperation among groups across the whole of Nillumbik.
For more information about the Network visit the Nillumbik Landcare Network website.
What is a Landcare group?
Landcare groups work together to protect and enhance natural resources on private land for the benefit of the whole community. Activities are generally centred around the management of broad-acre farmland, privately owned bushland, rural-residential land, reserved crown land and roadside verges within the Shire.
Landcare groups are a great source of information regarding local land management issues. Members often have a wealth of knowledge about their local catchment and can assist landowners in seeking land management information, technical advice and funding opportunities.
Local Landcare groups
There are currently 11 Landcare groups within the Shire of Nillumbik. Most of these groups organise regular field days, working bees, social events and/or information sessions with guest speakers.

Stringybark Community Nursery
Stringybark Community Nursery was originally established to collect and grow seed sourced locally for the 2009 fire affected properties in St Andrews, Strathewen, Arthurs Creek and Christmas Hills. The Nursery now supports local groups and individual landowners to maintain and enhance biodiversity by providing plants, usually at $1 per tube. Community members can also come together and develop new skills, or group members can propagate specific plants for projects. Working bees are held each Tuesday at 3.30pm and the second Sunday of each month from 9.30am until 11.30am at the nursery behind the Wadambuk St Andrews Community Centre, 35 Caledonia Street, St Andrews. For information call Sue Aldred on 0409 409 288 or Gayle Corr on 0427 921 151.
