A celebration of 25 years of reconciliation in Nillumbik

25 years of reconciliation in Nillumbik

In 1998 the then Mayor of Eltham delegated an Advisory Group to arrange a ceremony to promote reconciliation in the Shire. The event was held in Wingrove Park in May 1998. The Mayor made a statement of Apology and an Acknowledgement of past injustices to the Wurundjeri People in the presence of Wurundjeri Elders. A document of Commitment to Reconciliation was also handed to and accepted by a Wurundjeri Elder. A Coolamon was presented by Uncle Ian Hunter to the Mayor, and this is now in the Art Collection at the Shire.

From the Advisory Group, the Nillumbik Reconciliation Group was born.

Nillumbik Reconciliation Group, with support from Nillumbik Shire Council, are holding an event to mark 25 years since this beginning.

The event will be celebratory, with entertainment as well as a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country by Wurundjeri Elder Ian Hunter.

Entertainers include the Djirri Djirri Dancers, Scott Darlow and Eltham High School Symphonic band performing a new work by Dr Jodie Blackshaw, commissioned for the day.

This is a celebration for all the Community.
