October is Walk to School Month

Each October the Walk to School Month program encourages Victorian primary school students to walk, ride or scoot to and from school to build healthy habits.

Last year, more than 140,000 students took part and walked the equivalent of two return trips to the moon.

Once again, Council is promoting the Walk To School Month program and assisting schools to participate. This year we are offering grants of up to $500 towards an activity that will raise awareness and get children out and active.

Walking School Bus

Walking School Buses are a fun way to get to school. The Walking School Bus follows a set route and picks up 'passengers' along the way. Volunteers, usually parents, supervise primary school students as they walk to school in a group.

Children get regular exercise and learn about road safety while socialising and making new friends. Reduced car travel benefits the environment and eases traffic congestion around schools.

To find out more about how to start and run a Walking School Bus at your school, go to the VicHealth website
