10 years on 2009 bushfires - burnt log with new growth

"Today our community stops, reflects and sheds a tear as we remember the devastating loss of life and property caused by the 2009 fires that savaged our region,” Cr Egan said.

“It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since Victorians experienced one of the worst heatwave and bushfires in our history. We reflect and remember those who died in the bushfires, learn about how the fires changed the lives of many, and how our resilient communities have rebuilt.

“The strong and consistent message from the community has been that any commemorative activities be carried out with the dignity and sensitivity in keeping with the solemnity of the occasion. We share this view and are supporting local commemorative activities in this way.

“I offer my sincere sympathy to the people across our Shire and Victoria who have suffered and continue to suffer from this tragedy. I recognise the first responders, the volunteers and the people who so bravely served our community during this time."
