Anne’s Wetland is one of the Shire’s premier wetlands and, in summer, is brimming with diverse indigenous insect life. This is due to the excellent habitat it provides for insect groups such as beetles, butterflies, native bees, and flies. These insect groups provide very important services for ecosystems, including pollination, predation, and serve as food sources for animals higher up the food chain, such as insectivorous songbirds including the Golden Whistler and Olive-backed Oriole. Without healthy, flourishing ecosystems supported by insects, humans also miss out on essential benefits such as shade, climate regulation, and the enjoyment of seeing and hearing amazing flora and fauna while walking along creek lines like the Diamond Creek.

The habitat resources at Anne’s Wetland include:

  • food plants such as purple loosestrife, Sweet Bursaria, and Hop Goodenia
  • dense vegetation providing essential refuge and resting spots, from plants such as prickly moses and Carex appressa
  • suitable places to lay eggs, including Poa species and Lomandra longifolia.

These plants and habitat features are located relatively close to each other in Anne’s Wetland, meaning insects do not need to travel far to meet their habitat requirements. And this is important, because insects, just like humans, prefer resources to be relatively close together.

This event is a collaboration/partnership between Friends of Diamond Creek & Hurstbridge, Nillumbio and Nillumbik Shire Council Environment Team.

Nillumbio will lead the walk - this will include an Acknowledgement of Country and give context of place while gathered near the carpark/grassy area. We will then move slowly, observing as we go, discussing qualities of the site, making our way to the Wetland.

Join us to discover indigenous insects and share tips for creating insect-friendly backyards and conservation areas.
