Bin collection

Nillumbik Shire Council provides a kerbside bin collection service for all properties we collect rates from. The standard service includes:

  • a weekly green waste collection
  • a fortnightly recycling collection
  • a fortnightly landfill collection

What to put in each bin

Green waste (green lid)

Our green waste bins have a green lid. They are collected weekly and turned into compost.

What to put in your green waste bin

Food scraps

  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Dairy
  • Meat and small bones
  • Bread, pasta and rice
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds

You can put your food scraps in loose or wrapped in a small amount of newspaper or paper towel. Do not use a plastic bag.

Garden materials

  • Clippings
  • Small branches
  • Prunings
  • Leaves
  • Flowers
  • Grass
  • Weeds (including ivy, creepers and vines)

What to leave out

Do not put plastic bags in your green waste bin, even if they are labelled 'biodegradable' or 'compostable'.

You can take your plastic bags to a REDcycle drop-off point.

There are drop-off points at many Coles and Woolworths stores. If you can't access to REDcycle drop-off point, put them in your landfill bin.

Recycling (yellow lid)

Our recycling bins have a yellow lid. They are collected fortnightly and recycled.

What to put in your recycling bin

  • hard/rigid plastics (plastics holding a shape or form) such as milk bottles, take away containers and soft drink bottles
  • cardboard (including lightly soiled pizza boxes)
  • paper, newspaper and magazines
  • steel or aluminium cans, trays, aerosol cans and foil (scrunched in a ball)
  • glass bottles and jars

What to leave out

Do not put plastic bags or soft plastics in your recycling bin.

You can take your plastic bags and soft plastics to a REDcycle drop-off point.

There are drop-off points at many Coles and Woolworths stores. If you can't access to REDcycle drop-off point, put them in your landfill bin.

Landfill (red lid)

Our landfill bins have a red lid. They are collected fortnightly and go to landfill.

What to put in your landfill bin

  • Nappies
  • Polystyrene/foam
  • Pyrex, drinking glasses
  • Crockery and broken ceramics
  • Window glass and mirror glass
  • Soft/flexible plastics - if you can, take these to a REDcycle collection point
  • Textiles/rags
  • Any non-hazardous materials that can't go in the green waste bin or recycling bin

What to leave out

Do not put in food or garden material in your landfill bin. Use your green waste bin instead.

How to put your bins out

  • Place bins out by 6.00am on collection day, half a metre apart and away from trees, power poles and cars.
  • Squeeze any air from bags of rubbish before placing in your landfill bin. This will create more space in your bin, stop waste from getting stuck and prevent a partially-emptied bin.
  • Do not over compact your bin.
  • Do not overfill; the lid must be closed.

Moving house

If you are moving house, please leave all three bins at the property for the next resident to use.

If you have built a new house on a block that was previously vacant or did not have a bin service, select the option below to 'Order bins for a newly built property'.
