Transfer an accommodation business registration

In Nillumbik, all accommodation businesses must be registered with Council and follow regulations to help minimise health risks. 

If you are purchasing an accommodation business that has an existing business registration, an application must be made to Council to transfer the registration to the new owner of the business.

Step 1.Do your research

Make sure you are familiar with the background information and requirements of operating an accommodation business.

Step 2.Arrange a pre-purchase inspection

We advise arranging a pre-purchase inspection before entering into a contract to purchase an existing accommodation business. A pre-purchase inspection will inform you of any outstanding items or structural requirements placed on the business. A pre-purchase inspection may also help with negotiating the settlement with the existing proprietor. Contact the Environmental Health team (9433 3340 or to arrange a pre-purchase inspection.

Step 3.Gather supporting documents

Your application will need to include:

  • A floorplan of the business, showing all equipment and sink locations

Step 5.Email the form to us

Email your completed application form to, attention to Environmental Health.

Step 6.Receive a receipt email from us

After you email your application form, a member of the Environmental Health team will respond with a receipt email. This email will contain a payment reference number.

Step 7.Pay the application fee

You can view the schedule of fees and charges under the 'Fees' tab.

Pay with cash, cheque, money order, EFTPOS, Mastercard or Visa. Please note we do not accept Diners Club and American Express

What happens next?

After your submit your application:

Council assesses your application

After your application is received and the application fee is paid, an Environmental Health Officer will review the submitted documents.

Risk assessment

An Environmental Health Officer will contact you to arrange an appointment to meet onsite and conduct a risk assessment. A report will then be issued listing any non-conformances.

Final inspection

After any non-conformances have been attended to, an Environmental Health Officer will attend to conduct a final inspection.

Certificate of Registration

Following the final inspection, a Certificate of Registration will be issued.
