Nillumbik Shire Council is a proud supporter of the annual 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence campaign.

This global campaign aims to raise awareness and galvanise individuals, communities and organisations to address gender inequalities, call out harmful gender stereotypes to prevent violence, and create a more safe and equal society.

The campaign begins each year on 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and concludes on 10 December (International Human Rights Day).

2025 campaign

In 2025, Council will mark the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign 2025 by:

  • Lighting up the Eltham Gateway sculpture in orange
  • Stencilling the Respect Victoria tag line - 'Respect Women - Call it Out' - throughout the Shire. Look out for the bright orange stencils across Nillumbik's sporting clubs, trails and leisure facilities throughout the campaign!
  • Participating in the Walk against Family Violence in Melbourne CBD on Friday 28 November.
  • Hosting a youth 'Packing Party' for the Share the Dignity - 'It's in the Bag' campaign - providing hygiene products and other essential items for women and girls in need this festive season.
  • Promoting our community partnerships with DV Safe Phone and Escabags.

Our commitment

Nillumbik Shire Council is committed to preventing gender-based and family violence and promoting gender equality.

This is an important issue that affects many people, and we are certainly not immune in Nillumbik. In 2023-24, there were 440 incidences of family violence reported in our Shire, with the majority of incidents occurring between an adult victim and adult perpetrator. 33 per cent of reported incidents occurred in the presence of children, and there were 152 reported breaches of family violence intervention orders.

There is no excuse for any type of violence or disrespect, and we need to work together to call it out.

For more information about local family violence support services, see the family violence resources page.
