A new walking trail covering over 200km along the Birrarung Valley from the mouth of the Yarra River (Birrarung) in Port Phillip Bay to the Upper Yarra Reservoir has been proposed.
The Birrarung Valley Walk aims to link mainly existing walking tracks and paths on public land, creating a multi-day continuous walk focused on protecting, enhancing and promoting the natural environment and First Nations culture of the Birrarung.
The project has been proposed by Birrarung Valley Walk Inc and is an outcome of the Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo — Yarra Strategic Plan, endorsed in 2021. This 10-year strategy, led by Melbourne Water, seeks to protect and enhance the Birrarung and its parklands.
Members of the Yarra Collaboration Committee, comprising 15 government and agency stakeholders, have committed to a collaborative approach to the stewardship and care of the Birrarung through Burndap Birrarung burndap umarkoo.
The Birrarung Valley Walk will focus on creating a low-impact walking experience that enables people to connect with the river environment and nearby points of interest, while supporting conservation, connection, cultural recognition, and regional tourism opportunities.
