Nillumbik Shire Council is urging immediate action following the Greensborough Bypass/Diamond Creek Road roundabout being named Melbourne’s most dangerous intersection.

This declaration comes after thousands of Victorian road users took part in a recent RACV survey, identifying the most hazardous roundabouts across the state.

The Greensborough/Diamond Creek intersection received the highest number of votes representing the long-standing safety concerns raised by the local community.

Mayor John Dumaresq acknowledged the seriousness of the issue, noting that the roundabout has been a persistent source of frustration and risk for residents.

“This roundabout is dangerous. I am glad to see it recognised for being unsafe and its potential to get event worse,” Cr Dumaresq said.

“We’re bracing for a 30% surge in congestion at the roundabout once the North East Link opens in 2028. This is a serious concern given the roundabout’s role as a key access point to vital community facilities and destinations,” he said.

“We need action now to prevent this from becoming an even greater risk to safety and accessibility,” Cr Dumaresq continued.

Nillumbik Shire Council will be working in partnership with Banyule City Council to step up its advocacy efforts. Together, they are calling on the Victorian Government to fund a $300,000 feasibility study to guide future design and costing for intersection upgrades.

Blue Lake Ward Councillor Grant Brooker spoke about the challenges Apollo Pathways residents face trying to leave or enter the area.

“This intersection is extremely difficult to navigate and it’s only going to get worse. If we don’t make any changes soon, I fear local residents are going to see far more accidents and traffic just to exit and enter their neighbourhood,” Cr Broker said.

Council is urging the Government to deliver these upgrades in alignment with the completion of the North East Link, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the community is prioritised.
