Expressions of interest are now open for NEST, which stands for Nutrition Education and Skills Training, a free, evidence-based cooking and nutrition program delivered by OzHarvest.

If you’re finding yourself suddenly spending more time in the kitchen and don’t know where to start, or you’d just like some help making simple affordable meals, the five week program running from 19 November to 17 December at Edendale Farm is designed for you.

The fun and practical course for older adults aged 55 and over, can support those people who may be learning to cook for the first time or adjusting to new routines at home due to life changes.

Mayor John Dumaresq said the program is an important way to support older Nillumbik residents who are navigating new roles at home.

“Whether due to the loss of a partner, illness, or simply changing circumstances, many older people, and particularly men in our community are having to learn new skills in the kitchen,” Cr Dumaresq said.

Edendale Ward Councillor Kelly Joy said “NEST offers not just cooking lessons, but the confidence and connection that comes from learning together in a welcoming and fun environment.”

Each week, participants will take part in a two and a half hour session, including practical cooking lessons and group nutrition activities, before sharing the meal they’ve made together.

At the final session, everyone will receive a take-home toolkit, a cookbook packed with easy budget-friendly recipes, and a certificate. Those who attend four or more sessions will also receive a $25 Woolworths voucher.

The program is free to attend, and will be hosted by Council’s Ageing Well team in partnership with Edendale Farm.
