Works will include

The project involves recapping the closed landfill at the end of Graham Road, Kangaroo Ground to comply with the latest EPA regulations for closed landfills.

This requires the cap to be impermeable and eliminate the ingress of any surface water into the capped landfill waste below.

  • Reshaping of the existing cap
  • Redistribution of any exposed waste
  • Stockpiling of site won soils to be used as cover soils
  • Importing of additional cover soils
  • Importation and laying of impermeable liners
  • Testing and compliance of all materials, including soils
  • Installation of sub-surface drainage and gas collection pipes/system
  • Installation of new monitoring bores
  • Surface drains, including swales, bunds and outfall structures
  • Final application of cover soils and seeding
  • Clean-up of the site and surrounds

Funding details

The works are fully funded through the Waste Management Charge, issues and collected through the rates process.

Project updates

  • The project is nearing completion with Practical Completion to be achieved on or around the end of May 2026.
  • Some additional works and minor rectification works are expected to be completed by 30 June 2026.
  • At this stage, it is anticipated the open space will be open to the public in July 2026, subject to all works being approved.
