Advocacy priorities

Council’s advocacy work is vital in securing funding and support for initiatives that benefit the whole community.

Our priorities reflect what our community has told us is important - safer roads, better public transport, well-maintained sporting facilities and strong environmental protections.

Key advocacy priorities

These five key priorities focus on delivering major infrastructure upgrades to support safer, more efficient movement for pedestrians and vehicles across Nillumbik.

Many of these initiatives fall outside Council’s direct responsibility, and will require financial and strategic support from other levels of government.

Bus routes in rural communities

We are seeking a State Election commitment for a State-led bus network review and an extended Hurstbridge to Mernda bus connection, improving access to jobs, education and essential services across Melbourne’s north-east.

Completion of the Aqueduct Trail

We are seeking a $9 million State Election commitment to plan and construct the missing section of the Maroondah Aqueduct Trail, creating a safe, continuous off-road link between the Plenty River Trail and Diamond Creek Trail.

Greensborough Bypass/Diamond Creek Road roundabout

We are asking the Victorian Government to undertake a business case to inform the upgrade of the Diamond Creek Road/Greensborough Bypass intersection.

Pedestrian crossing in Eltham North

We are advocating for a pedestrian crossing across the Hurstbridge railway line between Coolabah Reserve and the Eltham North Adventure Playground.

Yan Yean Road Stage 2

We are seeking $1.65 million to seal three local roads in Yarrambat prior to roadworks associated with the Stage 2 upgrade of Yan Yean Road, along with initiatives to reduce the incidence of wildlife being killed on the road.

Other priorities

In addition to the key projects above, a further 23 electorate-based projects have been identified. Many involve upgrades to local sporting facilities.

Council will collaborate with local MPs to explore funding opportunities for these initiatives.

Eltham

Includes Eltham, Eltham North, Research, Diamond Creek, Wattle Glen.

Warrandyte

Includes North Warrandyte.

Yan Yean

Includes Plenty, Yarrambat, Doreen, Yan Yean.
