In 2026, Nillumbik Shire Council will be joining Councils around greater Melbourne to participate in the City Nature Challenge.

Help us compete with cities in a worldwide survey by recording wild species between 24 - 27 April on iNaturalist

By uploading your photos you will:

  • Help protect biodiversity in Nillumbik by giving scientists valuable data and inform conservation decision-making!
  • Learn about our wildlife neighbours in the Shire and where to find them
  • Get experience identifying species
  • Have fun with other nature lovers and build a friendly community!

How to join the challenge

  1. Download the iNaturalist app.
  2. In Projects, search for "City Nature Challenge 2026 Nillumbik" and join the project.
  3. Record as many observations as you can between 24th - 27th April!  In your backyard, out in a park, wherever! You'll find that when you're looking there is nature everywhere.
  4. Learn about the species you've found on iNaturalist, the App will help you identify what you've found.
  5. Watch the numbers roll in for Nillumbik Shire, Greater Melbourne and the rest of the world!
