Hard waste

Nillumbik provides a hard waste service through booked collections. Residents are entitled to one hard waste collection per financial year of two cubic metres per household i.e. 1m wide x 1m high x 2m long. The contractor will not collect materials over two cubic metres. Examples of a materials that equal two cubic metres include:

  • two double mattresses
  • one double mattress and an additional one cubic metre of material
  • one stove, one fridge, two paint tins
  • one stove, one chair, one roll of carpet
  • one fridge, one chair, 10 pieces of bundled and tied timber 

Book your free hard waste collection

  1. Contact 9433 3512.
  2. Once booked, our contractor WM Waste Management will send you a collection week confirmation letter and a fluoro sticker to place on your hard waste.
  3. WM Waste Management schedules a collection 'week'. Materials must be placed out for collection by 6am on the Monday and will be collected before 5pm Friday that week. We are unable to schedule specific collection times and dates.
  4. Where possible, place your hard waste just inside your front yard on the Saturday or Sunday before your collection week, with the fluoro sticker visible and clear access to the items.
  5. Items must be able to be lifted to shoulder height by two people and be no longer than 1.5 metres. Incorrect items or loads over two cubic metres will not be collected and must be removed within 24 hours.
  6. To ensure the correct amount of material is collected WM Waste Management takes photos of the items before and after the collection.

The hard waste service is for items that are broken or can't be reused. Try to donate or sell unwanted items to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Recycling near you has more information.

What will be collected

  • Empty and clean paint tins with the lids off

  • Old tins, scrap iron and other waste metal

  • Crockery

  • Household furniture

  • Mattress of mattress base. Maximum of  two e.g. one mattress and one mattress base or two mattresses

  • Carpet rolled and tied. Maximum of one roll which must be no longer than 1.5 metres and able to be safely lifted by two people

  • Household appliances such as refrigerators with doors removed, stoves, washing machines, dishwashers and electrical appliances

  • Tools, mowers and small car parts

  • Sheet glass wrapped in several layers of strong paper and taped. This must be marked ‘GLASS’

  • Up to 10 pieces of timber neatly tied and not exceeding 1.5 metres in length

What will not be collected

  • Renovation material, building waste and cement sheeting

  • Waste from commercial and industrial premises

  • Fence panels

  • Bricks, concrete, stone

  • Clay, sand, soil

  • Liquids including paint, oil, garden sprays, chemicals

  • Hazardous waste including asbestos

  • Household garbage

  • Green waste

  • Tyres

  • Batteries of any type

  • Gas bottles
