Apply for a footpath trading permit

You will need a permit from Nillumbik Shire Council if you want to use the footpath to:

  • display goods for sale
  • provide outdoor eating facilities
  • display an A-Frame advertising sign.

If you don't have a permit, you may get a fine.

Step 1.Read the permit conditions

Read the permit conditions listed in our Amenity Local Law Administrative Policy Guidelines(PDF, 751KB).

The relevant sections are:

  • Advertising Signs, Local Law Clause No 14
  • Trading activities, Local Law Clause No 19.

Step 2.Prepare a diagram of the area 

Prepare a diagram showing the:

  • property line, footpath, nature strip and road
  • dimensions of the items you wish to place on the footpath
  • intended position of the items, showing the distance from the front of your premises.

Step 3.Make sure you have public liability insurance

You will need to provide evidence of current public liability insurance for a minimum of $10 million.

Fees

As part of Council's commitment to supporting businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, fees that would ordinarily be applicable for footpath trading permits are currently being waived.
