Apply for a permit to place a shipping container on private property

If you would like to place a shipping container on privately owned land within Nillumbik, you will need a permit under the Nillumbik General Local Law 1.

Before you apply

Note the following:

  • This permit applies to shipping containers used for storage only. If you wish to place a shipping container on your property for another use, you may need a planning permit.
  • This permit is not required for properties larger than four hectares.
  • You will need to detail the purpose for the use of the shipping container as part of your permit application.
  • Permits may be subject to planning approval.
  • Permits are issued for a maximum of 12 months.
  • If you are not the owner of the property, you will need to provide written permission from the property owner as part of your permit application.

Permit conditions

If a permit is approved, certain conditions will apply. This may include specifying the approved location of the shipping container to ensure it does not negatively impact the amenity of the area.

Fees

The application fee for a permit to place a shipping container is $115.00. This amount is correct as of 1 July 2025.

Step 1.Check your property size

This permit is not required for properties larger than four hectares.

Step 2.Get your documents ready

  • You will need to attach a certificate of currency for public liability insurance from the company undertaking the installation.
  • If you are not the property owner, you will need to upload written permission from the property owner.

Note we do not accept Diners Club or American Express.

Once we receive your application, our Community Safety team will review your details, and get in touch if we need more information. After we assess your application, you'll be notified of the outcome via email. This can take up to 10 business days.
