Have you ever dusted off your bike for a long-overdue ride, only to find the tires are flat and the gears don't change? Do you want to know more about getting your bike ready for riding?

This workshop will teach you the basic skills to maintain your bike and check it's ready and safe to ride.

Participants will learn to identify key bike components, essential items for rides, and the ABCDEQ method for pre-ride maintenance.

The session includes practical demonstrations and hands-on activities, enabling attendees to perform maintenance checks, change a tyre, and adjust brakes and gears.

Demonstrations

Key maintenance tasks covered include puncture repair kit components, the ABCDEQ checks (Air, Brakes, Chain, Drop, Ends, Quick-release), and how to perform each check.

Hands-on practice

Participants will inspect their bike tyres, remove and replace inner tubes, and practice puncture repair techniques.

What you'll learn

By the end of the session, you'll know how to:

  • identify the main parts of your bikelist the essential items to take on a ride
  • perform a series of pre-ride bike maintenance checks (tyres, brakes, chain, handlebars, wheels etc)
  • take a wheel off and repair a punctured tube
  • adjust your brakes and gears.

What to bring

  • Your own bike to work on
  • A helmet, for testing your bike on the day
  • A dropsheet (or old sheet, blanket, towel etc) for working on your bike indoors
  • A bike toolkit, if you have one (optional)
  • Any parts or accessories you'd like help working on

It's also recommended you wear old clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.

Who it's for

This session is for anyone wanting to learn basic bike maintenance to keep their bike in good condition and ready to ride. It will help you prepare your bike for the upcoming Labour Day and Easter long weekends.
