Lost Skills: Crotch Repairs

Crotch damage is one of the most common reasons a pair of pants gets retired early. The seams take constant stress, and the inner thigh area is prone to fabric wear and tear. In most cases, though, the damage is repairable.

Learn the main techniques for mending crotch damage in pants and jeans. You'll learn how to assess the type of damage you're dealing with and choose the most appropriate repair method for each, whether its fabric thinning, a small hole, a seam failure, or a complete blowout.

Techniques covered will include:

• reinforcing worn and thinning areas
• mending seams
• prepping major damage for repair
• patching holes and blowouts
• using sashiko mending to create beautiful, unique repairs that will stand up for years to come.

By the end of the session, you'll have the skills to tackle this repair at home, and extend the life of garments that would otherwise be thrown away.

What to bring

Attendees are encouraged to bring:

• a basic sewing kit (if you have one)
• a pair of pants in need of repair, such as jeans, trousers, leggings, or anything with crotch damage
• thread in a matching colour to your pants
• matching fabric to patch large holes (if required).

If you don't have any damaged pants to practise on, that's fine. We'll have sample items available on the day.

This event is part of REthink Nillumbik - a series of free and low-cost workshops at the local Hurstbridge and Edendale repair cafes. At these sessions you can learn fantastic new skills to use at home, and help our shire to reduce waste and transition to a circular economy. A circular economy is one that repairs, reuses and repurposes objects rather than throwing them away.
