Hidden disabilities
Nillumbik Shire Council is a proud member of the globally recognised Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program.
We are committed to creating a more inclusive, accessible and welcoming community for everyone.
Many people live with disabilities, health conditions or neurodivergence that may not be apparent to others but can affect how they experience everyday situations and interact with services.
Examples include:
- Autism
- ADHD
- Hearing impairment
- Vision impairment
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Dementia
- Chronic pain
- Chronic fatigue
- Learning disabilities
- Acquired brain injury
- Epilepsy
Everyone's experience is different. By recognising the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, Council aims to foster greater understanding, reduce barriers to participation and help ensure that all community members feel respected, supported and included.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower provides a simple, voluntary and discreet way for people to indicate that they may need additional support, understanding, patience or extra time when accessing services, facilities, programs and events.
By wearing a Sunflower lanyard, badge or wristband, individuals can choose to signal that they have a hidden disability. Wearing the Sunflower is always a personal choice and participation is entirely voluntary.
Meet Ellen, a Nillumbik resident, disability advocate and mentor, who shares her lived experience to help build greater awareness, understanding and inclusion for people with hidden disabilities.
