Borrow a Biodiversity in Backyards Kit

Borrow this free kit to explore the biodiversity in your own backyard and learn more about the hidden wonders of the natural world. 

The kit includes specialist equipment and resources. Use the motion-triggered camera to survey animals visiting your property and the songmeter to record bird calls and other wildlife sounds. 

You can then use the included guides to identify what you have found.

What's in the kit? 

  • Instructions - the kit comes with easy-to-follow instructions for equipment set up and recommended resources to identify what you have found. 
  • Motion-triggered camera (including SD card and charger) - Use this to conduct fauna surveys in your backyard and capture images of local wildlife. 
  • Micro Songmeter(and charger) - Record wildlife sounds on your property, like bird calls and other animal vocalisations. 
  • Straps - Use these to secure the camera and songmeter onto a stable location. 
  • Flora of Melbourne Guide and The Australian Bird Guide - Use these guides to help you identify what you have found. Apps such as iNaturalist can also help with identification. 

How do I borrow the kit? 

Please read through the following information and then fill out the form. You will then receive an email notification when the kit is available. 

Loan period: 2 weeks 
Pick up period: You will have 3 business days to collect the kit after receiving your notification email. If the kit is not collected within this period, it will be offered to the next person on the waiting list. 
Pick-up location:
 Customer Service at Nillumbik Shire Council's Civic Centre - 32 Civic Dr, Greensborough, Victoria 3088.
Pick-up time:  9.00am - 5.00pm, Monday to Friday (Closed on public holidays). 
Returns: Return the kit to the Customer Service Desk within 2 weeks of borrowing it. Please return the kit on time so that other community members have the opportunity to use it.
