Nillumbik Shire is divided into seven wards, each represented by one democratically elected Councillor. All Councillors serve a four-year term.
The next Nillumbik Shire Council general election will be held Saturday 24 October 2020.
As legislated, Council will enter a Caretaker Period (Election Period) commencing at midnight on Tuesday 22 September 2020 and concluding at 6:00pm on Saturday 24 October 2020.
Council’s Election Period Policy was developed to ensure that general elections for Council are conducted in a manner that is ethical, fair and equitable, and are publicly perceived as such. The revised policy was adopted by Council at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 25 August 2020.
In 2019 the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) conducted an Electoral Representation Review where the existing seven ward structure was retained with a slight boundary adjustment between two wards. More information regarding the Review including the final report can be viewed on Council’s website.
The management of Council elections is undertaken by the VEC.
The conduct of Council elections is regulated by The Local Government Act 2020, and the Local Government (Electoral) Regulations 2020.
All candidates in the 2020 general elections must undertake mandatory training delivered online via the Local Government Victoria website - please see 'Information for election candidates' below.
Previously known as the “Returns Officer”, the Election Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of the election for which they are appointed, including the establishment of the election office and recruitment and training of office staff.
The Election Manager will publicly declare a candidate to be elected by 13 November 2020.
Nillumbik's Election Manager in the 2020 elections will be Doug Hocking.
The election office will open to the public on 16 September 2020.
