Council-enrolled voting

Some ratepayers can apply to vote in Nillumbik council elections.

Council-enrolled voters are:

  • property owners, occupiers or represent a corporation
  • 18 or older
  • not a State-enrolled voter within the Nillumbik area.

Council manages the application process, and the Victorian Electoral Commission sends out ballot packs to enrolled voters.

Once you're enrolled, you must vote. If you don’t vote, you may get a fine.

Types of council-enrolled voters

Owner ratepayers

An owner ratepayer owns a property in Nillumbik and pays rates but is not a state-enrolled voter.

For example:

  • you own an investment property but don’t live in the area
  • you own a home in Nillumbik but don’t yet have Australian citizenship.

You still need to be 18 or older on election day.

Apply as an owner ratepayer

Up to two ratepayers can apply to enrol per property, but each person only gets one vote. If you wish to resign your enrolment, email nillumbik@nillumbik.vic.gov.au or call 9433 3111.

Occupier ratepayers

An occupier ratepayer pays rates for a property in Nillumbik that they occupy but don’t own (for example, they operate a business and pay rates as part of the lease agreement).

You need to be 18 or older on election day and not a state-enrolled voter.

Apply as an occupier ratepayer

If you enrolled to vote in the 2024 Nillumbik council election, your enrolment expires before the next council election. If you want to continue to vote, you must apply to enrol again before the next election. You will be sent an invitation when it is time to renew your enrolment.

Up to two people per property can apply to enrol, but each person only gets one vote. If you wish to resign your enrolment, email nillumbik@nillumbik.vic.gov.au or call 9433 3111.

Corporations

You can apply to enrol to vote on behalf of a corporation if you:

  • are a director or company secretary of a corporation that pays rates (either as an owner or an occupier) in Nillumbik
  • have consented to being appointed as the corporation’s representative
  • are not already a state-enrolled voter or council-enrolled voter for Nillumbik.

Only one person can apply to enrol as the corporation’s representative.

If you meet any of these criteria and wish to apply, email nillumbik@nillumbik.vic.gov.au or call 9433 3111.
