Does AI offer exciting new horizons for creativity and efficiency, or risk diluting the value of human-crafted writing?

How do we protect and recognise authentic human creativity and knowledge in this rapidly evolving landscape?

Will mastering AI-generated content become a vital skill in itself?

Welcome to the new world of literacy.

Come along for an evening of insight, discussion and debate at the Creative Industries 2025 Networking Event on Thursday 5 June, 6pm - 9pm at Eltham Library.

Mayor John Dumaresq said the event is a great opportunity for the creative community to explore how AI is influencing how we communicate and connect.

“In a world where the written word is quickly evolving, conversations like this help us protect human creativity, and consider what is important to all of us,” he said.

“We’re pleased to be presenting this free event with our partners Banyule City Council, Yarra Plenty Regional Libraries and Writers Victoria, to bring together a fantastic panel to lead this timely discussion.”

The panel will explore how AI is reshaping the world of writing, creativity and literacy to tackle the big questions facing writers and creatives today.

The keynote speaker is Andrew Dean, lecturer at Deakin University and author of Metafiction and the Postwar Novel. Andrew brings unique insight into how AI intersects with literary studies and the future of human creativity.

Joining the panel are:

  • Kate Mildenhall, award-winning author of The Hummingbird Effect and co-host of The First Time podcast, which has featured Australia’s most celebrated writers.
  • Annabelle Hale, Eltham-based author/illustrator and winner of the 2023 SCBWI Australian Picture Book Illustrator Awards Emerging Illustrator Award.
  • Les Zigomanis, chief editor and the production coordinator at Busybird Publishing, screenwriter and author, helping writers bring their stories to life.

Connect with fellow creatives, explore the possibilities and challenges of AI in storytelling, and enjoy light refreshments from 6pm.
