Nillumbik’s new Council Plan sets the course for the next four years

Nillumbik Council has given the green light to its new Council Plan for 2025–2029, following endorsement at the 30 September Council Meeting.

The plan sets out Council’s strategic direction for the next four years, outlining how it will serve and support the people who live, work, visit and do business in the Shire.

Mayor John Dumaresq spoke about the importance of the Council Plan.

“We are looking forward to working alongside our community to bring these priorities to life over the coming years,” Cr Dumaresq said.

“The plan is a key piece of the puzzle when it comes to shaping our future together,” he said.

“It has been formed by our community and tells us what needs to be done, what matters most to our people and when we need to make it happen,” Cr Dumaresq said.

The plan was created with plenty of community input, including feedback from a dedicated Community Panel. It truly reflects what matters most to the people of Nillumbik.

These include:

• Inclusion and connection: building a community where everyone feels welcome and supported.
• Thriving places and spaces: investing in infrastructure that brings people together.
• Environmental sustainability: protecting natural beauty and planning for a climate-resilient future.
• Transparent governance: making thoughtful, evidence-based decisions in partnership with the community.

The plan also outlines key actions across several focus areas:

• Environment and climate resilience: managing bushland reserves, enhancing biodiversity and implementing the Urban Tree Canopy Strategy.
• Public space safety and accessibility: upgrading parks and amenities to be cleaner, safer and more inclusive.
• Active lifestyles and transport access: supporting inclusive fitness programs and advocating for better sports and transport infrastructure.
• Community health and inclusion: investing in food access, education and social connection through local hubs and services.
• Transport and safety infrastructure: advocating for priority projects including safer crossings, improved public transport and key road upgrades.
• Township growth and planning: finalising master plans and improving parking and connectivity in Diamond Creek and Eltham.
• Planning, housing, roads and water: balancing housing needs with neighbourhood character, upgrading roads and enhancing water management.

Council will continue to report back on progress and engage with the community to ensure the plan remains responsive and relevant.
