Young voices shaping Nillumbik’s future

Council is putting young people’s voices at the centre of local decision-making by releasing the 2026 Youth Summit Report Card, which includes a set of youth-led recommendations.

The report captures the ideas of 47 young people from across the Shire who came together at this year’s Youth Summit to share their perspectives and vision for Nillumbik’s future.

Hosted by Council’s Youth Development Team and designed in partnership with the Nillumbik Youth Council, the summit focused on issues that matter most to young people, including mental health and wellbeing, gender equity, social connection, employment pathways, environment and sustainability, and harm reduction.

Participants identified a range of recommendations, from youth-led environmental initiatives and improved access to mental health support, to tailored career expos, more inclusive community spaces, and stronger education around respectful relationships and harm prevention.

Importantly, the summit also strengthened young people’s confidence to take action, with 96 per cent of participants reporting that they feel motivated to continue creating change in their community.

Youth Mayor Tahlia Edmonds said the summit created a platform for young people to speak up and help bring about change.

“The Youth Summit shows what’s possible when young people are given the space to share their ideas and work together on solutions,” she said.

Nillumbik Mayor Cr Naomi Joiner said the Youth Summit demonstrates the value of listening to and empowering young people.

“Young people bring insight, energy and fresh perspectives to the challenges and opportunities facing our community. This report highlights their strong commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive and sustainable Nillumbik,” the Mayor said.

“Council is proud to support opportunities like the Youth Summit, ensuring young people feel heard and can actively contribute to matters that shape their future.”

Council will now work alongside young people, schools and community partners to progress the recommendations and continue building opportunities for youth participation and leadership.
