Beyond Age exhibition

To acknowledge World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Council's Ageing Well team launched the Beyond Age artworks in June 2026.

Beyond Age is primary prevention community arts project aiming to combat elder abuse through using artwork and storytelling.

Each portrait pairs a contemporary image with a photograph of the participant as a younger person, alongside their personal reflections on ageing.

The artwork aims to challenge ageism, promote respect and spark conversations about what it means to grow older.

Nillumbik took an intergenerational approach to Beyond Age, partnering with Eltham High School to involve senior photography students in the project.

Students and members of Council’s Positive Ageing Advisory Committee (PAAC) attended a workshop run by Seniors Rights Victoria where they explored their lived experiences of ageing, discussed how ageism affects everyday life, and shared advice they would give to their younger selves.

Students then conducted a photoshoot of PAAC members where they took portraits that they later edited into the final artworks.

View the portraits at Wadambuk St Andrews Community Centre, on display until 31 August 2026,
