Girls Footy Celebration Day

The Eltham Junior Football Club's Girls Footy Celebration Day is a full day dedicated to celebrating girls and women in Australian Rules football, while showcasing the opportunities available for girls of all ages to participate, develop and thrive in our game.

This event brings together players, families, volunteers and the wider community for a festival of football that highlights the growing strength of the girls' game.

The day features five consecutive matches, beginning with the Under 12 girls before progressing through the Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 age groups, culminating with the Eltham Senior Women's team taking on Whittlesea in the afternoon. This unique schedule allows young players to watch and be inspired by older girls, while senior players can encourage and support those following in their footsteps, creating a visible pathway from junior football through to senior competition.

Throughout the day, AFLW players will visit each junior team before their match to deliver short motivational talks, sharing their experiences and encouraging players to enjoy their football, support their teammates and believe in what they can achieve. Following each junior match, the AFLW players will present Best on Ground medals, recognising players who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship and determination.

The celebration extends beyond football. Music will play throughout the day, creating a vibrant festival atmosphere, while families can enjoy face painting, temporary tattoo art, a photo booth and other activities. The club's canteen and barbecue will operate throughout the day, providing a welcoming place for players, volunteers and spectators to come together.

The day will conclude with remarks from the Club President and a short address from the Council representative, acknowledging the importance of investing in girls' and women's sport and recognising the volunteers, coaches, officials and families whose commitment makes community football possible.

Girls Footy Celebration Day is about far more than the results on the scoreboard. It is an opportunity to celebrate participation, build confidence, strengthen friendships and inspire the next generation of girls to play, lead and remain involved in football. By bringing every girls' team together for one day, the event creates a sense of belonging and pride while demonstrating that girls' football is valued, visible and continuing to grow within our community. It is a celebration of inclusion, opportunity and the positive impact that community sport has on the lives of girls and young women.
