Nerreman Gateway Reserve
This reserve follows the stormwater creek line of Karingal Yalloc feeding into the Diamond Creek. The site has a heritage listed dam built in 1940 and sits as a reminder of the farmland this reserve use to be. Revegetation of the creek line began in 2001 helping to showcase the diversity of flora and birds. The critically endangered swift parrot migrating from Tasmania to south-eastern Australia in winter has been spotted here making it a favourite for birders.
Clover Glycine (Glycine latrobeana) has been reintroduced to the reserve, as well as the Matted Flax Lily (Dianella amoenea).
Highlights
Fauna – swift parrot, tawny frog-mouth, rare bees
Flora – lilies, daisies, peas
Friends Group
The Friends of Karingal Yalloc have been carefully restoring habitat and biodiversity alongside the Karingal Yalloc Creek for more than 20 years. Vegetation at this site is a critical factor in the creek's health as it is primarily stormwater fed. Vegetation provides a layer of protection from run off pollution into the creek. The group aims to protect the reserve against degradation and to create additional habitat for the animals and plants that utilise it.
The Group’s Convenor Ian, who formed the group in 2002, said “The underlying motivation for us was our wish to restore this environment to something like its original nature, for the benefit of indigenous flora and fauna, clean water, and as an attractive public amenity.”
The Friends of Karingal Yalloc meet on the last Sunday of each month between 10am-12pm.
Get involved through our website and the group’s socials. Visit Friends groups or Friends of Karingal Yalloc on Facebook.
