The Eyrie Reserve
The Eyrie Reserve (pronounced ear-ry) is a small one-hectare slot of remnant bushland nestled within urban development.
It provides a home for native flora and fauna in the suburbs with a variety of birds including Gang-Gang cockatoos. Native flowers transform the reserve with colour in spring, including the Matted Flax Lily (Dianella ameona) which is critically endangered in Victoria and rare Geranium species.
Highlights
Fauna – Gang-Gang cockatoos and lots of native pollinators
Flora – peas, orchids, daisies, rice-flowers, lilies
Friends Group
The Friends of The Eyrie Reserve in Eltham was established in 2021 after the group’s convenor Jennifer noticed the decline in visitations by the endangered Gang-Gang Cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum). She developed a desire to conserve and restore the habitat values for the benefit of the species. Due to the efforts of the group, an array of wildflowers, native grasses, and endangered plant species have been reintroduced.
"Eltham feels like a community working towards the same goals. The Friends of The Eyrie Reserve I hope, contributes in small ways to preserve our green space. Volunteering has made me feel fulfilled that I can give back to nature. When we have weeded a patch to prepare for planting…satisfaction. Watching our trees grow after years of being slashed….excitement. I would encourage anyone to volunteer, to take that extra step and go beyond thinking about it! It will broaden your horizons, you will meet likeminded people," said Jennifer.
Friends of The Eyrie meet on the second Sunday of every month between 10am-12pm.
