International Day of People with Disability in Nillumbik

Council celebrates International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) today, Wednesday 3 December by supporting a range of community-led events that champion inclusion, creativity and connection across the Shire.

Each year, Council provides grants of up to $1,000 to community groups, schools and not-for-profit organisations to help deliver activities that acknowledge and celebrate the day. In 2025, seven local organisations have been awarded grants to host events from December 2025 to February 2026 that highlight the strengths, stories and contributions of people with disability.

This year’s supported events are:

• Eltham Wildcats Basketball Club - a free neurodiverse-friendly basketball clinic for children aged five to 10, giving families a safe and inclusive space to connect through sport.
  
  
• Eltham High School - ‘Someone Else’s Shoes’ - wheelchair basketball workshops inviting students to build empathy and deepen their understanding of physical disability.
  
  
• St John of God Accord - ‘Seen and Celebrated’ - a vibrant art exhibition showcasing the creative talents of local artists with disability, supported by an opening event on 2 December.
  
  
• Nillumbik Dementia Alliance - an interactive afternoon exploring dementia supports available locally, with sensory tools, demonstrations and a welcoming afternoon tea.
  
  
• Always Invited - ‘Exceptional Minds, Real Needs’ - a community event with guest speakers offering insights into supporting high-IQ autistic students across primary and secondary school.
  
  
• Resilience in Colour - an inclusive art program for people with disabilities, neurodivergence, mental health challenges and others who’ve faced adversity.
  
  
• Araluen - “See Me in Clay” - a three-week ceramic art exhibition at Montsalvat, celebrating Araluen artists with disability and their contribution to Nillumbik’s cultural life.

Mayor Cr Naomi Joiner said Council is committed to supporting a community where everyone feels valued and supported.

“International Day of People with Disability is an important reminder of the contributions people with disability make to our Shire every day,” Cr Joiner said.

“These grants help the Nillumbik community celebrate those achievements, create opportunities for connection, where everyone can participate and thrive.”

IDPwD is a United Nations-observed day that encourages people worldwide to challenge perceptions of disability and work towards more inclusive communities.
